OET Medicine for IMGs — Your Match 2027 Guide
Updated: Oct 23

✅ OET Medicine for IMGs — your practical plan ❤
Guys, OET is another step in this journey, and you can prepare for it with a clear plan 🙌 The goal is to communicate well with patients and colleagues: listen carefully, explain clearly, and show that you understand their concerns. Start with the official format, find your weak areas, and build from there.

Updated October 2, 2026 • Match 2027 For the 2027 ECFMG Pathways: Listening 350 · Reading 350 · Speaking 350 · Writing 300. Achieve all four minimums in one test administration. If one component falls short, ECFMG requires you to retake all four.
✅ 1. Check your own certification route first
OET Medicine is required for applicants using the ECFMG Pathways. Passing it alone does not complete ECFMG Certification. Applicants with a valid passing result on the former Step 2 CS should follow the requirements that apply to their situation.
Plan backwards from your deadline For the 2027 Pathways, qualifying OET results must come from a test taken on or after January 1, 2025. ECFMG recommends testing no later than the last scheduled date in December 2026. It must receive your scores directly by January 31, 2027. Leave time for a retake and processing; do not leave this for the last week!
2. Know what you will actually do
Listening: approximately 40 minutes, 42 questions, three parts. You complete consultation notes and answer questions about short workplace recordings and longer presentations or interviews. Practice with each recording played once.
Reading: 60 minutes, 42 questions, three parts. Part A tests quick information retrieval; Parts B and C require careful understanding of workplace and longer healthcare texts. Practice scanning without losing the meaning.
Writing: 45 minutes for one profession-specific task, usually a letter based on case notes. Think about the reader, the purpose, and which information that reader needs. A longer letter is not automatically a better letter.
Speaking: approximately 20 minutes, including two healthcare role-plays.
Practice speaking to a patient or carer with empathy, a clear structure, and everyday language.
Your clinical knowledge helps you understand the setting; this is a communication assessment.
✅ 3. Build a preparation plan that fits you
Begin with an official Medicine sample test under timed conditions.
Keep a small error log: what went wrong, why, and what you will do differently next time.
Your starting level and feedback should determine your study time; someone else’s two-week plan may not be your plan.
A simple practice cycle 🙌 Diagnose → practise → get feedback → repeat. Each week, include timed listening and reading, a complete writing task, and speaking practice with a partner. Give extra time to your weakest component, while keeping the other three active.
✍️ Writing: make the purpose easy to see
Before writing, identify who receives the letter and why you are writing. Select relevant case notes, organize them logically, and make the requested action clear. Check accuracy, tone, clarity, and language against the published assessment criteria.
Use the sample answer as a learning tool, not a script to memorize. Ask for feedback that explains the problem and helps you revise it. If you pay for feedback, check the teacher’s experience, the service provided, and the price first.
Speaking: practise caring communication
Record a role-play with a study partner. Listen again: did you acknowledge the patient’s concern, explain without jargon, check understanding, and give them space to respond? Practise these habits aloud instead of only reading phrases.
Try this during practice ❤ “That sounds worrying. Could you tell me what concerns you most?” “Let me explain that in a simpler way.” “Just so I know I explained it clearly, how would you describe the plan?” Adapt your words to the actual patient and task. Warmth matters more than a memorized performance.
Listening and reading: review the reason, not just the answer
After a timed task, identify whether your mistake came from vocabulary, missing a detail, misunderstanding the speaker’s purpose, or rushing. Review the transcript or answer explanation, then repeat a similar task with one specific improvement in mind.
Do not treat a fixed raw score such as 30/42 as a guaranteed scaled score. Use official score guidance and look for consistent performance rather than relying on a shortcut.
4. Book carefully and release your results
Choose Medicine and a delivery mode accepted for your certification route. Check current dates, fees, identification requirements, and rescheduling rules before paying. Practice with the format you will use on test day.
For results released to ECFMG on or after May 14, 2026, follow its instructions to enter your MyIntealth ID.
Authorize OET to release your results directly to ECFMG using the current official process.
Uploading a screenshot or simply receiving your results email is not the same as completing score release.
Your final checklist ✓ Confirm your Pathway and accepted test date. Check all four required scores from the same sitting. Arrange direct score release and use the correct identifier. Track receipt and the rest of your Pathway requirements. Keep time for problems, processing, and a possible retake.

While looking for fertility treatment clinics in London, I ended up on this website unexpectedly and started reading through it. I wasn’t planning to spend much time, but the clarity of the content made it easier to keep going. It felt more approachable than most medical sites I’ve seen. I’m still exploring my options, but this clinic feels worth considering. https://lunafertility.co.uk/
